The Bridge has implemented a Living Conditions Improvement Project on demonstration basis in a slum settlement located at Rangpuri Pahari, Mahipalpur, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. The primary objective of this project is to motivate residents of the area to undertake reconstruction/repair of their existing juggis with incorporation of a kitchen and toilet within the house, leading to honourable living conditions, enhancement in self esteem/self respect, better health conditions, clean environment, sanitation and overall cleanliness.
The beneficiary, Ms. Shanno, a resident of the slum was selected for the project, which has participatory approach as its main attribute. The beneficiary has contributed 40% of the cost of project through her own savings and was involved from the beginning.
The beneficiary’s house originally did not have pucca roof, a kitchen, toilet, proper walls, flooring etc. The house was totally unhygienic. The beneficiary with her two school going daughters had to use open fields for toilet facilities, had kitchen within their room and did not have access to filtered drinking water.
After implementation of the project, the beneficiary’s house has now a kitchen (with counter with gas burner), toilet (with english wc, washbasin, provision for hot/cold water supply), pucca roof, proper plastered walls, proper stone floor, fully distempered walls, painted windows & doors, proper piped water supply in kitchen/toilet, concealed electric wiring, decent electrical fittings etc.
We are sure that providing honourable living conditions will lead to enhancement in self esteem/self respect of the beneficiary and her daughters. It will also result in better health conditions, cleaner environment, and overall cleanliness.
The theme of our project is “To Enhance The Quality Of Life Through Improvement In Living Conditions With Participatory Approach
